Summary of the contracting process

The Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board bought agricultural services to run cereal and oilseed variety-testing trials across the United Kingdom. The trials support the AHDB Cereals and Oilseeds Recommended Lists by generating independent data on new varieties, their characteristics and market options. The results help levy payers and the wider industry choose varieties suited to different cropping systems and local markets, supporting productivity and reliable grain supply. The work covers the testing needed to provide data for selecting crop varieties for recommended and described variety lists. This is a specialist agricultural research and field-trial requirement, relevant to organisations with expertise in cereal and oilseed trials, variety assessment and agricultural data production.

The procurement is complete and the contract was awarded to the Agri-Food and Biosciences Institute (AFBI). It used a direct award below the applicable threshold, without competition, for one lot. The contract was signed on 1 July 2026 and runs from 1 August 2026 to 1 November 2027. Its value is £43,333.33 excluding VAT, or £52,000 including VAT. The award is for services classified as agricultural services and covers the full Recommended List Variety Trials requirement. AFBI is the selected supplier and the award remains active. The contracting process is recorded as complete, while the associated contract is active during its stated delivery period.

This procurement indicates a requirement for a technically capable agricultural research organisation able to design, manage and deliver cereal and oilseed variety trials across the United Kingdom. A credible future competitor would need practical field-trial capacity, suitable sites and resources for growing and comparing crop varieties, and staff able to collect reliable, independent data. Experience translating trial results into evidence for recommended or described variety lists would be directly relevant. The work also requires an understanding of levy-funded agriculture, crop production systems, local market requirements and the information needed by growers when selecting varieties. Organisations combining agronomy, trial management, scientific analysis and clear reporting would be well placed when this requirement returns to market.
