Summary of the contracting process

NHS South West London Integrated Care Board commissioned acute hospital and related healthcare services from St George’s University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The requirement covers acute healthcare services, including Commissioner Requested Services, dental services and community services. It is classified as hospital and related services (CPV 85110000) and is commissioned for South West London. The services are provided by St George’s University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, a large NHS organisation based in London and operating St George’s Hospital in Tooting. The requirement sits within the Integrated Care Board’s commissioned acute hospital and community services, and includes both hospital-based and community-facing provision. Businesses relevant to this requirement would therefore need to deliver NHS acute care alongside associated community and specialist healthcare services.

The contract has been awarded and subsequently formally modified under the Health Care Services (Provider Selection Regime) Regulations 2023 through Direct Award A; the Procurement Act 2023 does not apply. The active contract was signed on 1 April 2025 and runs from 1 April 2024 to 31 March 2027, a period of 1,080 days. Its modified lifetime value is £2,361,761,317, an increase of £900,797,317 from the original lifetime value of £1,460,964,000. The modification took effect on 1 April 2025 and did not change the contract term or nature of the services. It provides additional non-recurrent support covering fixed-element services, winter funding, COVID-19 services and testing, cancer performance, delegated services, blood-borne-virus funding, patient engagement, diagnostic centres, heart failure, industrial action and elective recovery.

This procurement demonstrates substantial demand from South West London for an established provider able to deliver a broad acute healthcare portfolio within the NHS commissioning system. A credible future competitor would need the clinical governance, workforce, estates, operational resilience and specialist pathways required for acute hospital services, together with the ability to deliver community services and dental provision. Relevant experience would include working with an integrated care board, managing Commissioner Requested Services and supporting elective recovery, cancer performance, heart failure pathways and diagnostic capacity. Providers would also need to handle time-limited or non-recurrent funding streams, including winter support, COVID-related services, industrial-action response and blood-borne-virus work. The selected organisation’s scale and existing NHS delivery position indicate that capacity, governance and proven public-sector healthcare performance are central to competing for this requirement.
