Summary of the contracting process

NHS Somerset Integrated Care Board commissioned a specialist weight management service for patients across Somerset. The service is a multidisciplinary healthcare programme providing dietetic and psychological support, patient-centred weight management, healthier diet and exercise choices, and clinically appropriate pharmacotherapy with medication monitoring. It is intended to address biomedical, psychological and social factors affecting weight, reduce associated disability, unemployment and healthcare costs, and improve access to pain management. The provider is also expected to identify suitable step-down pathways, work with local weight management providers where appropriate, and use patient and public feedback to improve the service. The procurement is classified as health services. Delivery is across Somerset, with the commissioning organisation based in Yeovil.

This is a completed Provider Selection Regime award under Regulation 8, using direct award process B without prior publication of a competition. The contract was approved on 29 June 2026 and awarded to Oviva UK Ltd; the award is recorded as active. The contract was signed on 20 August 2026. Its initial term runs from 1 August 2026 to 31 July 2027, with a duration of one year. The recorded contract value is £0.01. One bid was recorded. Evaluation placed 100% on quality, covering the absence of a realistic alternative provider and patient choice, and 0% on price. NHS Somerset Integrated Care Board is the buyer and commissioner.

This requirement suits an established specialist healthcare provider able to deliver integrated weight management at county scale, rather than a supplier offering a single intervention. A credible competitor would need multidisciplinary clinical capability spanning dietetics, psychological support, medication pathways and ongoing pharmacotherapy monitoring, with practice aligned to national guidelines. It would also need systems for timely, patient-centred care, reducing inequalities and waiting times, supporting self-management, and measuring patient outcomes. Experience of coordinating with local providers on step-down or follow-on interventions would be relevant, as would the ability to involve patients and the public in service improvement. Providers should be capable of working within NHS commissioning arrangements and demonstrating safe, sustainable pathways that address both clinical and wider social factors affecting weight.
