Summary of the contracting process

Great British Energy - Nuclear plans to procure archaeological investigation and mitigation services for development of the Gwyndod project on Anglesey. Work is expected across the remaining main site areas, associated development land and other off-site land if required. The scope may include archaeological evaluation and trial trenching, excavation, strip-map-and-sample work, palaeoenvironmental assessment and analysis, plus post-excavation assessment, reporting, publication and archiving. Delivery will be phased around programme needs, access to land, consents and interfaces with other site activities. The supplier will provide appropriately qualified staff and manage fieldwork and associated outputs. This is a specialist archaeological services requirement, with work centred on Anglesey.

The process is at planning: Great British Energy - Nuclear has stated an intention to procure, but has not issued an invitation to tender. The procurement is expected to be divided into one lot and suitable for small and medium-sized businesses. The anticipated contract period runs from 8 July 2027 to 7 July 2028, with a possible extension to 7 July 2029. The buyer expects to publish a further notice by 24 February 2027. Market engagement is planned, with draft requirements and background material expected to be available from 10 November 2026. Interested suppliers are asked to review these materials and respond to the engagement questionnaire by 27 November 2026; access requires a mutual non-disclosure agreement. Dates and requirements remain indicative and may change.

This is likely to suit archaeological consultancies and contractors able to plan and deliver multi-phase field investigations on a major development site. Relevant expertise may include archaeological evaluation, trial trenching, excavation and strip-map-and-sample work, alongside palaeoenvironmental assessment and analysis. Suppliers should be equipped to manage suitably qualified field teams, coordinate work around site access, consents and other activities, and produce the full post-excavation outputs: assessment, reporting, publication and archiving. The single lot is expressly considered suitable for SMEs, which may make it relevant to smaller specialist providers as well as larger firms. The planned market engagement gives suppliers an early chance to examine draft project requirements and provide feedback while the buyer develops its procurement strategy; it is preparation and consultation, not a bid stage. No specific accreditation or experience threshold is stated here.
