This public procurement record has 2 releases in its history.

Summary of the contracting process

The public procurement contracting process for the "Marine Recorder Online Database" was awarded to JNCC by NRW. The procurement method used was a limited tender under the award procedure without prior publication of a call for competition. The contract is now active with a value of £155,000. The buying organisation, NRW, based in Llandysul, UK, responsible for environmental protection, initiated the tender process, which is now complete. The project involves the development of an online database crucial for marine ecology data management. The contract will end on 30th March 2027.

This contract presents opportunities for businesses in the environmental services industry to collaborate with NRW and JNCC in developing marine ecology data solutions. Companies specialising in marine data management, environmental protection, and ecological consultancy are well-suited to compete in this tender. The strong partnership between NRW and JNCC, established through extended involvement, provides a foundation for future collaborations to ensure access to accurate and historical data for environmental reporting and advisory purposes. Businesses with expertise in marine data collection, storage, and analysis are encouraged to engage in this procurement process.

Notice Title

Marine Recorder Online Database

Notice Description

Marine Recorder was developed about 20 years ago by JNCC in conjunction with the country agencies (NE, CCW, SNH, etc), to meet the needs of the country agencies to accurately collate, store and share survey data. It holds seabed survey data, especially from quadrat, core, grab, diver and video surveys. The physical data (depth, zone, sediment granulometry, etc) and the biotope data (biological community) that are associated with the species data are all held together. It is important to note that the data held in Marine Recorder is used both for reporting and for more general advice. Importantly, it is crucial for WFD and Article 17 (Reg 9a in the future) reporting. However, it is also used for casework advice (datasets showing Annex I and Section 7 habitats are available to developers, for example), advice on managing Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) (e.g. identification of areas of sensitive habitats or species), advice on completion of the MPA network (currently a high priority piece of work).

JNCC are developing an online database, which will meet NRW's needs for most marine ecology data (including transferring data from the current database) to a specification agreed by JNCC and the project steering group Both parties have been involved for an extended period, this has built a trust and allowed for stronger partnerships. JNCC is familiar with NRW processes and needs, therefore it is imperative for NRW to retain this partnership where the outcome provides the access to and continuation of accurate and historical data.
