Summary of the contracting process

The NHS Wales Shared Services Partnership-Procurement Services, hosted by Velindre University NHS Trust, is in the planning stage of procuring a Paediatric Dental General Anaesthetic Service. This contract is aimed at addressing the need for specialised dental anaesthetic services for children and young adults aged 3 to 17 in the Swansea Bay University Health Board area. Due to existing theatre capacity constraints, this service cannot be provided in-house or in a General Dental Practice environment and must be delivered by a specialist provider. The contract, valued at £832,000, is planned to commence on 1st April 2026, running until 31st March 2028, with the service available within the Swansea, Neath, and Port Talbot areas.

This procurement presents a strategic growth opportunity for healthcare providers specialising in paediatric anaesthesia and dental services. Businesses equipped with the appropriate facilities and qualified staff who can deliver safe and compliant anaesthetic services will be well-suited to compete. The project aligns with national standards and the Swansea Bay University Health Board guidelines, necessitating providers with established expertise and infrastructure to ensure the best outcomes for young patients. Engaging with this procurement could expand a business's footprint within Wales, especially for those focused on niche healthcare sectors.
