Notice Title
Very Large Scale Wave Energy Generation and Alternative Generation Technologies
Notice Description
This is a Contract AWARD Notice and as such the procurement process is complete. The requirements are divided into two lots. Proposals which use structured evaluation and assessment processes to maximise their ability to identify additional sources of opportunity are likely to score well. Such methods should investigate, among other sources, opportunities which take advantage of specific characteristics of wave energy that differ from other offshore renewable energy conversion such as, but not limited to, detuning, load shedding or other survival strategies. Proposals should include an early (~3 week) detailed planning phase followed by discussion with WES and agreement of scope for delivery of the remainder of the project. Lot 1 - Very Large Scale Wave Energy Generation Lot 2 - Alternative Generation Technologies
Lot Information
Very Large Scale Wave Energy Generation
Offshore wind has achieved a great deal of cost reduction through incremental scale-up of turbines in their generation capacity, however it is believed that technical constraints or cost benefit balance will eventually limit turbine sizes. Wave energy may be able to make similar strides in competitiveness through scale-up of individual device size and/or generation capacities and may not be constrained until even greater scale is achieved than offshore wind. WES therefore invites proposals for landscaping studies to identify and analyse opportunities for development of very large scale wave energy converters.
Alternative Generation TechnologiesThe challenge is to identify and analyse opportunities for improved competitiveness through application of alternative generation technologies to the wave energy sector. Technologies of interest could be those which provide direct conversion of kinetic or potential energy to electrical energy, such as but not limited to electro active materials, reducing the number of energy conversion steps and removing significant sub-system capital costs. The focus of this project should be on the alternative generation technologies and their ability to convert the appropriate kinetic/potential energy of ocean waves into electrical energy, rather than their ability to conform with existing wave energy converter architectures.
