Lot Information

Lot 1

In February 2018, a new group of young people, the Young Scot 5Rights Youth Leadership Group, was launched by Young Scot, the Scottish Government, and 5Rights to place young people at the heart of the implementation process for 'Our DigitalRights'. Consisting of 30 young people, aged 11-19 from across Scotland, the Youth Leaders have been investigating how some of the recommendations can be put into practice. This challenge will focus on the Youth Commission's recommendation 5.1 around cyber resilience, with a strong emphasis on their right to remove: 'We call for a centralised point online for young people to review their digital footprints - using the data that we have already shared constructively and positively.' As 5Rights is a co-design project with young people that involves the meaningful participation of young people as early on as possible in all decision making processes, we expect the same level of youth participation and engagement in the design and development process of the solution. How the Challenge Participant involves young people, from within the Young Scot 5Rights Youth Leadership Group and wider afield, throughout this process will therefore also form part of this challenge. Why the Challenge Sponsor is focused on this: In their investigation, the Young Scot 5Rights Youth Commission identified the need for better tools to help young people review what they have left behind across the web. It is easy to lose track of the data and content that we post or share online, but new digital tools can help them make informed decisions about how they should curate their digital footprints and exercise their right to remove. What the Challenge Sponsor would like to see: An accessible and easy to use technology that allows users to review their own digital footprints across the Internet. It would help users make informed decisions regarding how they might want their digital footprints to look for others, with guidance on how they could delete data, dispute the data uploaded by others, or make certain data private. The solution, as well as the wider working principles of the winning team, would also need to be compliant with all of the 5Rights principles, and must be respectful and supportive of young people's rights. Protecting users' data and safeguarding their privacy would be the priority. The Young Scot 5Rights Youth Leadership Group has been developing their ideas for the solution, and below is some of the features they would like to see in the solution. Note that this is an on-going process, and the specific details are subject to changes: - Provides information on the data that has been collected including an explanation of the privacy policies associated with those collecting or holding the user's data - Gamified educational elements that show young people the impact of their own digital footprint - An explanation of the definition of 'digital footprint' - Data generated within the solution should self-delete after a certain period of time. - All data collected through the solution should be anonymous - Guidance on removing content for all major digital services Co-designing with young people is also a core element of the 5Rights project, and as part of this challenge we would like to see the genuine and meaningful participation of young people throughout all decision-making processes. This will be done primarily through working closely with the Young Scot 5Rights Youth Leadership Group, as well as other diverse groups of young people which can be recruited by Young Scot. The final product from the solution must be promoted as 'powered by the Young Scot 5Rights Youth Leadership Group' Systems including software, APIs and databases the solution will need to work with and / or integrate with: The most popular social media platforms and online spaces amongst young people. To ensure accuracy and relevance to young people's lives, these will be decided by young people throughout the development process..
