Notice Description
The project will consider the application of technology that uses near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) to non-invasively measure oxygen saturation in tissue, to develop a tag that can monitor oxygen consumption in seabirds. The use of these tags for collecting empirical data on the energy expenditure of seabirds will inform displacement models.

Lot 1
Design an NIRS tag that can be deployed on key seabird species to gather energy expenditure data, with consideration on attachment methods and size and weight constraints. Species to include are: Northern Gannet, Black-legged Kittiwake, Common Guillemot, Razorbill, and Atlantic Puffin. Produce a set of tags as prototypes and assess the accuracy of these tags in measuring oxygen consumption rates and report on any further design iteration requirements. Provide an assessment on the suitability of these tags as a seabird monitoring tool including their ease of deployment.
