Forestry and Land Scotland (FLS) operate their own extractives sites within the forests in order to provide rock to deliver the construction and maintenance of the forest road network and associated infrastructure. These extractive sites are managed by the Regional Civil Engineering teams. Sites are only operated on a project by project basis and may be left unworked for many years depending on work programmes. When sites are worked, it is carried out by Contractors and FLS do not have a full time presence on site. The Central Region generally engages a contractor to carry out the drilling worksDue to turnover in staff, there is a requirement for vocational qualifications in order for Regional teams to safely manage the drilling and blasting operations.
