UNIVERSITY OF ABERDEEN

This public procurement record has 1 release in its history.

Summary of the contracting process

The University of Aberdeen, located in Aberdeen, has successfully completed the procurement process for the award of a contract for the SIMOA Immunoassay Equipment. This tender, categorised under the goods industry, was initiated as an open procurement method, with the contract being signed on 24th August 2020. Due to the unique technical specifications required for the equipment, competition was not sought, as it is the only available technology capable of measuring single molecules at the precision required. The contract value was set at £82,000.

This contract presents a significant growth opportunity for businesses in the specialised medical equipment sector, particularly those focused on advanced analytical technologies. Companies with expertise in immunoassay systems and related innovative diagnostics solutions may find themselves well-positioned to engage with similar future tenders. Additionally, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and businesses with unique patented technologies akin to that of Quanterix might be especially competitive in this environment.

Notice Title

Award of contract for SIMOA Immunoassay Equipment

Notice Description

Award of contract without seeking offers through a formal procurement procedure due to the fact that competition is absent for technical reasons. We can currently detect approximately tau down to about 30 pg/mL, whereas the levels of protein expected in plasma are in the region of 10-20 pg/mL. SIMOA has the ability to measure single molecules in a novel technology that is proprietary for Quanterix and supplied exclusively by Quanterix. Under clause 6(1) (b) (ii) of the legislation, a contracting authority may award a contract without competition (only where no reasonable alternative or substitute exists and the absence of competition is not the result of artificial narrowing down of parameters of the procurement). In this case, the grounds for not exposing to competition are as follows: - The digital immunoassay instrument provided by the supplier is the only one available in the market that has the ability to measure single molecules to the level required. - Quanterix holds the patent for the SIMOA technology platform
