Notice Title

Award of Provision of Sustainable Water Use

Notice Description

Scottish Water have stated the carbon emissions from the UK water sector are similar to the UK aviation industry. Most people are unaware of how much water they use and when asked, around 80% significantly underestimate their usage. The summer of 2021 was the driest in 160 years and reservoirs across Scotland reached some of their lowest levels, causing water scarcity in many areas. This year, 2022 has again seen areas across Scotland face significant water scarcity due to very low rainfall. The frequency of dry spells that put public water supplies at risk is expected to double this centuryThe primary objective of this research is to identify and evaluate existing research in relation to water use and disposal at household level in the UK, present an analysis of the current level of consumer knowledge and understanding, including the extent to which this relates to climate change and adaptation. Furthermore, an exploration of some international examples of consumer behaviour change in relation to household water use and disposal.Findings from the research will provide Consumer Scotland with evidence that it can share with stakeholders and be used to inform and influence alignment into Scottish Regulations, legislation and policy of the recast Drinking Water Directive, alongside any future Scottish Government water efficiency strategy. Research findings will also be shared with stakeholders to provide insight into the scale of consumer behaviour change required and potential methods for achieving this.
