The Pier Arts Centre aspires to transform the arts and creative sector as an engine of economic growth, social cohesion and well-being in Orkney. It aims to establish a creative arts hub in Stromness and extend its residency centre in Birsay. The proposed arts hub will offer new ways for audiences to engage with and experience creativity and support the growth of the Creative Industries locally. It will provide opportunities for the Pier Arts Centre to generate income. Its location, adjacent to the new Orkney Research and Innovation Campus, will enable further arts-science research. The expanded residency centre in Birsay will offer complementary opportunities for learning, networking, creating and exchange within an inspiring and historic rural landscape. It will further enable the educational work of the Pier Arts Centre, influence its programme and collection, extend networks for individuals and organisations and establish a landing site for those eager to visit and study in Orkney, whilst providing a launch site for local talent. Orkney is a leader in the strategies and technologies being developed to provide renewable energy and to reach Net Zero. The development of the creative arts hub and residency centre will consider the requirements of sustainably and meet or exceed the requirements outlined in PAS 2080. In order to achieve this, close liaison will be required with the client and the Islands Centre for Net Zero.
