Notice Title

Bullhole Berthing Structure

Notice Description

2.1.1 Bullhole berthing structure is located between Eilean nam Ban and Ross of Mull, North of Fionnphort (Isle of Mull). It provides good shelter but has restricted anchorage, depth of approx. 3m (chart Datum). The tide runs strong due to the narrow channel. Bullhole is a steel structure anchored to the rock with struts approximately 18m long and 5m apart connected to land via two walkways at either side, being the overall dimension of about 38m. The designer for the berthing structure was Crouch Hogg Waterman. Archive drawings are available from 1991 but these are not as built/construction drawings. There are four structural bents required to provide berthing/mooring for CMAL vessel. There is no available site investigation boreholes or laboratory testing but rockhead is observed close to the seabed. It is assumed therefore that the toe of the four main support structural steel elements are founded directly on sound rockhead.
