ACF Relocation Project
Notice Description
This project will deliver the migration of Eddie (HPC) and Eleanor (private cloud) services currently hosted at EPCC's Advanced Computing Facility (ACF) at the Bush Estate to ISG's Mary Somerville Data Centre (MSDC).
Lot Information
Lot 1
This project will deliver the migration of Eddie (HPC) and Eleanor (private cloud) services currently hosted at EPCC's Advanced Computing Facility (ACF) at the Bush Estate to ISG's Mary Somerville Data Centre (MSDC). These services are managed by ITI's Research Service Section (RSS) part of ISG. In addition, the project scope covers the internal migration of infrastructure hosting RSS's TSM backup service and other ITI services hosted at ACF. These migrations are predicated by the UK Government's proposal to establish the Exascale supercomputer service to support scientific and industrial research by 2025. ACF has been chosen as the site to host this service. To create the necessary space to facilitate the expansion of the ACF to host the Exascale service and after an options appraisal exercise, the decision was made to migrate the Eddie and Eleanor services to MSDC. In addition, the physical relocation of infrastructure within ACF of the server and storage components of TSM and other systems is also required to clear space for the Exascale services to be hosted in Computer Room 4 (CR4). Project teams have been mobilised in Estates and ISG to develop the appropriate plans for the expansion of MSDC and the migration of the Eddie and Eleanor services infrastructure from ACF to MSDC. It should be noted that the preparation work at ACF, apart from the internal ISG moves, and the installation of the Exascale service is not within the scope of this project and is being managed by a separate EPCC programme. This contract is awarded through Lot 1 of the SUPC SSSNA framework.
