Summary of the contracting process

The Scottish Government, located in Edinburgh, has successfully awarded a contract for an overview of UK and International Creel Tagging as part of their Marine Litter Strategy. This award, valued at £20,900 and under the category of "Marine research services," signifies the procurement stage's completion, with Howell Marine Consulting serving as the supplier. The procurement was conducted using the tender process and focused on enhancing policies to address marine litter, including the use of tags to identify marine debris. The project aligns with broader initiatives like the UK Marine Strategy and the Scottish Circular Economy, furthering efforts to tackle marine litter, particularly from fishing gear.

This procurement presents significant opportunities for businesses specialised in marine research and consultancy, particularly those with expertise in environmental protection and understanding of tagging programmes. Companies capable of providing innovative solutions to marine litter issues will find a valuable market in working with government bodies like the Scottish Government, who are committed to enforcing sustainable practices and policies. This environment encourages growth for SMEs in marine consultancy and eco-strategy development, fostering collaborations that align with national and international environmental goals.

Notice Title

Award of Overview of UK and International Creel Tagging (MS-P-0487)

Notice Description

The Scottish Government has a Marine Litter Strategy which was refreshed in 2022 and is a key deliverable of the UK Marine Strategy, Scottish Biodiversity Strategy and Scottish Circular Economy ambitions. We published new actions which focused on the most problematic types of marine litter including fishing gear and also supporting litter removal. To develop policy that will specifically support the identification of marine debris from static gear, the Scottish Government is commissioning a desk-based study to better understand the use of tags and tagging programmes across the UK and abroad where relevant.
