Summary of the contracting process

Buglife is seeking contractors for peatland restoration and re-wetting at Easter Greenrig Moss and Upper Jai Moss, near Falkirk in Stirlingshire, within the Easter Fannyside and Garberthill Muir sites. The work is intended to restore degraded lowland raised bog by repairing natural water levels disrupted by artificial drainage. The scope includes installing peat dams in drainage ditches, constructing water-retaining bunds, repairing dams and reprofiling peatland edges. The wider landscape includes raised and blanket bog and intermediate peatland, supporting rare plant and animal species. Buglife Scotland is managing the project on behalf of NatureScot and the landowners; Buglife is the buying organisation. This is a peatland restoration and land-management works contract, with delivery in the Falkirk area.

Buglife invited offers through an open procedure, with electronic submission. The procurement reached the tender stage. The stated submission deadline was 11 November 2026 at 17:00, and the bid opening was set for the same time. The contract period is 30 days. The procurement estimate is £139,000, while the stated value for the single lot is £39,000; these are separate published figures and should not be treated as a combined value. Bids must remain valid until 31 March 2027. The selection criterion is suitability, with conditions set out in the procurement documents, and bidders must provide the names and qualifications of assigned staff. Variants are not allowed. Work must not take place while the Taiga Bean Geese population is on the plateau.

This opportunity is best suited to contractors experienced in practical peatland or wetland restoration, particularly working on lowland raised bog and restoring hydrology through drainage blocking. Relevant capability includes installing peat dams, forming water-retaining bunds, repairing existing dams and reprofiling peatland edges. Suppliers will need to plan and deliver work on a sensitive habitat that supports rare wildlife, and schedule site activity around the restriction on working while Taiga Bean Geese are present on the plateau. The buyer requires the names and qualifications of staff assigned to the work, so a suitably qualified delivery team and evidence of relevant experience will help demonstrate suitability. The work is concentrated at two nearby peatland locations and has a short specified delivery period, making practical mobilisation and the capacity to complete the full scope important.

Lot Information

Lot 1

Buglife Scotland is managing this project to restore degraded lowland raised bog habitat at Easter Greenrig moss and Upper Jai Moss, near Falkirk, Stirlingshire on behalf of NatureScot and the landowners. The wider area comprises a mix of raised bog, blanket peat bog and intermediate peatland that provide a highly important habitat in the region, supporting a number of rare plant and animal species. Fundamental to enhancement of the site is restoration of the natural hydrology, which has been disturbed by man-made drainage channels. The work proposed in this contract aims to re-wet the site by damming these drains, retaining water on the site and raising the water table resulting in long term improvement to the raised bog habitat. We will be awarding a contract for installation of peat dams on drainage ditches, creation of water-retaining bunds, dam repair and edge reprofiling.
