Summary of the contracting process

The Ministry of Defence is initiating a planning stage for the procurement titled "AH-64E Helmet Mounted Display RFI," focused on military helmets in the United Kingdom. The engagement end date for interested parties to submit expressions of interest is set for 30 June 2022. This procurement aims to develop a binocular helmet mounted display to enhance operational effectiveness for the AH-64E, particularly in maintaining situational awareness for aircrew during critical operations. The project is based in Andover, South East England, with documentation available for public awareness through early engagement notices.

This tender presents a significant opportunity for businesses specialising in advanced military technology, particularly those with capabilities in helmet-mounted display systems, optical technologies, and sensor integration. Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and voluntary, community, and social enterprises (VCSEs) are encouraged to engage, as the Ministry of Defence is seeking innovative solutions that meet specific operational requirements. Companies capable of providing a high-definition, binocular display compatible with existing military systems could find this a lucrative opportunity to expand their market presence in defence contracting.

Notice Title

AH-64E Helmet Mounted Display RFI

Notice Description

The aim of this project is to develop an binocular helmet mounted display (HMD) for the AH-64E to potentially replace the current monocular display. The UK MOD wishes to understand products on the market or capabilities in development that may inform UK specific requirements. The critical capability of the HMD is to allow aircrew to maintain continuous heads-up eyes-out operation for maintaining Situational Awareness (SA) while also monitoring all critical platform and mission data. Not only does this assist in the prevention of Controlled Flight Into Terrain (CFIT) and reduce the probability of Mid-Air Collision (MAC), HMDs should be designed to enable operational advantage during warfighting through better informed decision making and enhancing the ability to operate low level at night. Industries with potentially viable products are invited to provide an expression of interest to ArmyProgs-CbtAvn-Shared@mod.gov.uk (FAO Major Huw Raikes, SO2 Attack Development) by 30 Jun 22. Any future HMD should realise an increased Field of View (FoV), binocular vision and a High Definition (HD) colour display. The HMD should be compatible with the existing AH-64E helmet design and should be capable of displaying an image intensified picture that can be used for pilotage and targeting. The system must be capable to allow operations in a Degraded Visual Environment (DVE) and Low Visibility Landings (LVL).
