Summary of the contracting process

The National Physical Laboratory (NPL), based in Teddington, England, has completed the procurement process for a Laboratory Information Management Service (LIMS) with a total contract value of £717,000. The procurement was conducted through an open procedure, and the tender period concluded on 20 April 2021, with the contract officially starting on 21 June 2021 and running until 21 June 2022. This initiative aims to enhance laboratory operations and compliance through a shared digital solution across its various laboratories, which specialise in diverse areas from Chemical and Biological Sciences to Quantum technologies.

This project presents significant opportunities for businesses, particularly small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) specialising in digital solutions and laboratory services. Companies offering innovative technologies or processes that can optimise laboratory management and improve efficiencies would be ideal candidates for similar tenders in the future. With NPL’s focus on strategic investment and technology integration, suppliers that demonstrate capabilities in delivering tailored digital services could see substantial growth by partnering with this prestigious organisation.

Notice Title

Awarded - Laboratory Information Mangement Service (LIMS)

Notice Description

The National Physical Laboratory (NPL) is comprised of over fifty laboratories, representing approximately fifteen major science areas, varying from Chemical and Biological Sciences to Medical, Nuclear, Thermal and Quantum technologies. Due to a previous lack of strategic investment, the laboratories have over the last twenty years or so operated autonomously, with little commonality between processes and systems implemented. With the aim of leveraging digital technologies to facilitate efficiencies in laboratory operations and compliance, and knowledge-sharing to support our strategic goal of creating impact from science and engineering, NPL intends to implement a common Laboratory Information Management solution and processes across the organisation. Initially, the selected application will be implemented in a pilot project in our newly opened Mechanical Testing facility, within the Advanced Engineering Materials (AEM) group.
