Summary of the contracting process

The Chelsea & Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust in London has completed a procurement process for the purchase of a Fibroscan standalone liver elastography machine, valued at £100,000. This procurement was classified under the medical equipment category and is part of the broader healthcare industry. The award notice was published on 16 July 2020, following a tender period that concluded on 16 June 2020. The contract is set to run from 1 July 2020 until 30 June 2025.

This tender presents a significant opportunity for businesses in the medical equipment sector, particularly those specialising in diagnostic imaging or related technologies. Given the growing need for advanced healthcare solutions, especially for conditions like Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, companies that can offer innovative medical devices, particularly for obese patients, would be well-suited to explore such contracts. The procurement method employed indicates a competitive environment, which may favour established suppliers with proven track records in the healthcare industry.

Notice Title

Purchase of Fibroscan standalone liver elastography machine

Notice Description

The Trust required to purchase new standalone liver elastography machine. The 'Fibroscan' is now the gold standard method to assess the degree of liver fibrosis in patients without the need for a biopsy and is used in clinical practice guidelines (including NICE) for many disorders such as Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C and Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). In recent years, the number of patients being seen in the liver clinic with NAFLD has increased dramatically. This is most commonly related to being overweight. Patients with NAFLD are not only at risk of developing liver fibrosis but also are at risk of heart attacks, strokes and diabetes. The new Fibroscan machines are able to measure the amount of fat within the liver with the CAP score (controlled attenuation parameter) to diagnose this without the need for biopsy. The standard 'M-probe' that the Fibroscan uses is often unable to take an accurate reading in patients who are very overweight. In these cases, the new 'XL-probe' is required to take the Fibroscan measurements.
