Summary of the contracting process

The National Physical Laboratory is seeking to procure up to eight bi-directional dual channel erbium-doped fibre amplifiers (EDFAs) through a competitive quotation process, classified under laboratory, optical, and precision equipment. This tender, titled "RFQ - L-band bidirectional optical amplifiers," is currently in the active tender stage and must be submitted by 14th January 2022. The procurement is aimed at supporting the long-distance dissemination of optical frequency standards and will take place at their facility located in Teddington, England, with the contract period running from 31st March 2022 to 30th December 2022.

This tender presents significant opportunities for businesses in the scientific and engineering sectors, particularly those with experience in optical technologies and systems integration. Companies that specialise in the production and supply of advanced optical equipment, especially small to medium enterprises (SMEs), are encouraged to participate. The requirement for reliable equipment and integration into IT management systems suggests a preference for suppliers with a proven track record in high-quality manufacturing and remote monitoring solutions.

Notice Title

RFQ - L-band bidirectional optical amplifiers

Notice Description

The National Physical Laboratory requirement is for a set of up to 8 (eight) bi-directional, dual channel erbium-doped fibre amplifiers (EDFAs) to support the long-distance dissemination of optical frequency standards. Bi-directional means that light can propagate in either direction through the erbium-doped fibre, the optical path being exactly the same. Dual channel means that each unit contains two independent EDFAs with a common control and monitoring interface. The signals to be amplified are expected to be at and around 1572 nm (ITU 100 GHz DWDM channel 07), however future use may extend across a larger wavelength band. Reliability is a key requirement for these bi-directional EDFAs to ensure uninterrupted operation over months when deployed in the field. The bi-directional EDFAs will be integrated into an IT-based management system. This implies the need for remote control and monitoring using standards-based communication interfaces and protocols. Additional information: The Authority is using the LUPC Bravo e-Procurement portal to conduct the procurement process. All Suppliers must register their company via the LUPC Bravo Portal.
