Notice Title

General Construction Multi Trade - GCMT - Capital projects (20% VAT)

Notice Description

This project seeks to replace the pumps and controls that feed Kew's central irrigation loop, with a properly designed, reliable system that provides long term solution to Kew's irrigation needs. The designers will also look at how the fire hydrants from irrigation system can be compliant fire-fighting equipment. The project will take six months to deliver and is estimated to cost PS560,000. The project scope excludes any upgrades to electrical incomers, additional landscaping and many pre-existing maintenance issues not related to the pump replacement. Kew's central irrigation system was installed in 2005. It consists of a 280k litre storage tank supplied by Thames Water. The tank feeds a set of six pumps, which push water out into the irrigation loop supplies the whole garden. The pumps also feed the fire hydrant loop, which supplies all firefighting hydrants within the Kew grounds. Ensure all elements of the design consider Kew's long term irrigation strategy and incorporate sustainable measures wherever possible. Since installation, the system has suffered numerous pump failures and in 2019 the whole system was replaced under a design and build contract with Irritech Limited. However, this was unsuccessfully at solving the issue of persistent pump failure and now only two of the 2019 pumps are still in working order. The defective system puts the health of the plant collection at risk and is a major cause of concern for Kew. Further, initial calculations suggest the current system does not provide enough pressure to supply both the irrigation and hydrant system together, adding risk to Kew's emergency response plans. A temporary system, comprising submersible pumps is currently being installed and providing adequate cover, and a long term back up system. However, this does not represent a sustainable solution and urgent action is required to design and install a system for the long term. Key stakeholders will be involved in developing the design. Design engagement has included Operational Estates and Horticulture. This opportunity has been distributed on adamprocure.co.uk
