Summary of the contracting process

The National Physical Laboratory (NPL) is planning to procure a bench-top microwave digestion system, particularly for the automated digestion of air quality samples. This procurement falls under the laboratory equipment category and is set in Teddington, London, with a contract period from 30 July 2021 to 29 July 2022. The tender is currently in the planning stage, with a prior information notice published on 24 May 2021, and the deadline for future notices is 28 June 2021. The system should be versatile enough to handle various sample types and comply with specific standards.

This tender presents a valuable opportunity for businesses specialising in laboratory and precision equipment. Companies that manufacture or supply microwave systems for environmental analysis, particularly those with capabilities in automated digestion and robust equipment design, would be well-suited to compete. Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) may find this procurement particularly accessible, as NPL encourages their participation in the bidding process.

Notice Title

PIN - Microwave Digestion System

Notice Description

The National Physical Laboratory [NPL] requirement is for a bench-top microwave digestion system that can perform automated digestion of primarily air quality samples, but with the versatility to digest a wide range of sample types. The air quality samples are collected in the form of particulate matter <= 10 um diameter (PM10) sampled onto cellulose filter papers. These must be digested in compliance with the BS EN 14902 standard. Other sample types of potential interest for future work include other environmental matrices, pharmaceuticals, and food. The system must have the potential to use HF, but it is understood that this usually requires purchase of additional vessel assemblies. The microwave must be programmable for automated digestion runs of different temperatures and pressures, within the specification below. The microwave system and accessories must be well engineered for robustness and reliable digestion of samples without the need for frequent replacement of expensive parts/consumables such as vessel components. Additional information: Please note that this is a Prior Information Notice and the tender is yet to be issued.
