Summary of the contracting process

The Sunderland City Council is currently overseeing the refurbishment of the Washington F Pit Museum, a project categorised under construction work related to leisure, sports, culture, lodging, and restaurants. This procurement is at the award stage, having already completed its tender phase, which ended on 9th October 2020. The contract, valued at £225,465, is set to commence on 18th November 2020 and will last until 30th April 2021. The works involve urgent repairs to prevent further decay of the museum's structure, including roof and masonry repairs, and upgrading essential internal systems. Bidders were required to showcase relevant experience due to the historical significance of the site, which is a Grade I listed building.

This tender presents substantial opportunities for businesses specializing in historic building renovations and conservation. Companies with experience in Grade I properties, along with expertise in masonry, joinery, and working with stakeholders like Historic England, would be particularly well-suited to participate. Additionally, businesses that can demonstrate competencies in handling ecological mitigation strategies, and those offering construction training in heritage skills, stand to gain from this project and potentially expand their portfolios while contributing to the preservation of cultural heritage.
