Summary of the contracting process

The Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames is currently undertaking a procurement process for the "Kingston Station Replacement Cycle/Foot Bridge" project. This initiative falls under the construction industry category, specifically focusing on works related to structures and parts of structures. The tender is at the 'active' stage and is expected to conclude on 29th May 2018. The project involves significant construction activities, including the demolition and rebuilding of a footbridge adjacent to Kingston Railway Bridge, with a total contract value of £800,000. The contract is set to commence on 1st July 2018 and is expected to be completed by 31st January 2019, with the procurement method outlined as an 'open procedure'.

This tender presents a substantial opportunity for businesses specialising in civil engineering and construction, particularly those experienced in bridge construction and related ancillary services. Companies capable of managing complex construction logistics and approved by Network Rail will find this opportunity particularly relevant, given the need for certified coordination around railway infrastructure. Firms involved in structural engineering, especially those proficient in steelworks and bridge fabrication, would be well-positioned to compete for this contract. The project could also benefit from collaboration with smaller subcontractors, providing pathways for broader business growth and engagement in large-scale public works.

Kingston Station Replacement Cycle/Foot Bridge

Notice Description

The proposed works comprise demolition of existing reinforced concrete bankseats of footbridge (existing footbridge has been removed previously), construction of reinforced concrete bankseats for replacement cycle bridge and fabrication and installation of a steel truss cycle bridge. The proposed footbridge is to be adjacent to Kingston Railway Bridge and is to bear on to the existing Network Rail abutments that are used by Kingston Railway Bridge. The existing footbridge currently bears on to the existing Network Rail abutments. It has been shown through a load assessment that the proposed bridge is to impose a lower load on the existing Network Rail abutments, for the following load cases, * Permanent only * Permanent and live loading The design of the proposed cycle bridge has incorporated suitable and safe methods of construction. This will minimise any impact to Network Rail infrastructure. This includes off site fabrication of the superstructure in factory conditions, which reduces work on site and, in particular, work at height. It is intended that the steel truss is transported to site in one piece and then lifted into place in one piece. The purpose of this contract package is appoint a principal contractor to finalise contractor designed elements (primarily steelwork connections); to undertake the adaptation of existing bridge foundations, civil works to the substructure, fabricate and undertake all ancillary tasks of steelwork system to the cycle bridge, transport the bridge from off-site fabrication facilities to the site in Kingston and installation.
