Notice Title
Availability of analytical methods for testing allergens in novel foods
Notice Description
The aim of this project is to provide an overview of the reliability, feasibility, and limitations of routine analytical methods, such as commonly used ELISA test kits, for the detection of regulated allergens in novel foods containing alternative proteins. This will focus on alternative proteins produced by precision fermentation and insect proteins, which are expected to be included in an increasing range of food products within the coming decade. The outcome of the review will inform us on the availability of reliable analytical methods for allergen detection in novel foods containing precision fermented protein or insect protein. This will in turn equip FSA with the required knowledge to respond to enquiries and incidents involving allergens in novel foods containing alternative proteins, which could increase as these products grow in popularity. The outcome of the review will also be of use to Public Analysts and Official Laboratories and could form the basis of future knowledge transfer and training activities to improve capability in this area.
