Notice Title

19/96 - Defibrillators - AWARD

Notice Description

The School of Health and Care Professions is looking to purchase 8 of PRE-HOSPITAL Manual External Defibrillators for use in our simulation facilities. Around 45% of the simulation run by allied health courses uses a defibrillator, primarily by paramedics for adult and paediatric advanced and intermediate life support. A defibrillator is used to administer an electric shock to the heart to restart it in the event of cardiac arrest. In the community, automated external defibrillators are located which can be used by members of the public who respond to an incident, usually with the assistance of a trained person over the phone. A paramedic requires not only the ability to administer a shock to the patient but also to have a wide range of monitoring and guidance from a pre-hospital defibrillator. At the University of Portsmouth we simulate the clinical scenarios students and professionals will work in, and wish to provide equipment that mirrors what is in use in practice. It is essential that the defibrillators work both on 'real' patients, to train students to use them for monitoring physical parameters, but also on our medical manikins which simulate patients requiring more advanced procedures such as a shock.
