Summary of the contracting process

The National Physical Laboratory (NPL) in Teddington, England, has completed a public procurement process for a CNC Turning Centre, aimed at enhancing its engineering capabilities. This procurement, classified under goods in the laboratory, optical, and precision equipment category, followed a limited procurement method with competitive quotations below the threshold. The tender period concluded on 8 September 2020, and the contract was awarded on 22 September 2020, with a contract duration starting from 2 October 2020 to 1 October 2021. The total contract value is £147,330.

This contract presents a significant opportunity for businesses specialising in precision machinery and tooling, particularly those adept in providing advanced CNC equipment compatible with existing CAM applications. Suppliers offering versatile manufacturing solutions for one-off or low-volume production runs would be especially well-suited to engage in future tenders of this nature. Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) may find particular advantage in competing for such contracts, given the acceleration of innovation within their operational capabilities.

Notice Title

RFQ Award - CNC Turning Centre

Notice Description

The National Physical Laboratory's [NPL] engineering department requires a new CNC Turning Centre to replace an existing machine and to complement the existing range of machine tools. The turning centre must interface with and be fully compatible with existing CAM application software tools, FeatureCAM and Autodesk Fusion. The control must also provide effective state of the art interactive conversational on machine programming. The nature of manufacturing at NPL requires that machine tools are effective for production of one-off and low number batches of components with a wide variety of size, geometry and materials, often with demanding tolerance specifications. Parts are made in a wide variety of material specifications and include a range of metals and non-metallic materials. Metal specifications include aluminium alloys, stainless steels, titanium, carbon steels, coppers, brass, nickel based super alloys and other special metal alloys. The range of plastic materials to be machined include various grades of nylon, Polyaryletheretherketone (PEEK(tm)), PTFE, acetal, acrylic, polycarbonate and a variety of other specialist plastics and plastic composites.
