Summary of the contracting process

The London Borough of Enfield has recently completed the procurement process for the "Edible Playgrounds" project, aimed at supporting education and healthy eating among children. This initiative falls within the education and training services category and is centred in London. The procurement was executed through a direct award method, and the contract was awarded on 11th January 2019. The total value of the service is fixed at £60,000, including £20,000 in match-funding. The contract period is set to commence on 25th February 2019 and will run until 26th February 2020, following a tender period that closed on 10th January 2019.

This tender presents a significant growth opportunity for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and voluntary, community, and social enterprises (VCSEs) that focus on educational services, particularly those with expertise in outdoor learning and health education. Companies geared towards creating engaging educational environments and promoting healthy lifestyles in children's education would be particularly well-suited to compete. The successful implementation of the Edible Playgrounds initiative not only bolsters community health but also enhances the reputation of businesses involved, potentially opening doors for future contracts in similar projects.

Notice Title

Edible Playgrounds

Notice Description

The Edible Playgrounds project offers a lively, engaging, multi-sensory way to teach children about growing and eating healthy food. The programme establishes a pattern for healthy eating that will stay with pupils throughout their lives. Aside from the physical benefits, healthy diets have been linked to an increase in cognitive function. Learning in an outdoor environment combats Nature Deficit Disorder and has been shown to increase mental health by boosting mood, confidence and self-esteem. Allowing children to connect with nature develops attentiveness and self-reliance, leading to more sustainable behaviours in the long term. Other benefits of the project include: * Providing teaching support across the National Curriculum. * Raising standards and improving pupils' PSED (Ofsted). * Building on health initiatives already in place and helps gain Healthy Schools awards. * Parents appreciate the commitment to teaching pupils in a more holistic manner - this can be a decider when they are settling on a school. Trees for Cities will need to describe how they will meet the terms of the specification in its application. The value of the service is fixed at PS60,000, of which, PS20,000 match-funding will be provided in cash by Enfield Public Health.
