Summary of the contracting process

The Environment Agency is seeking suppliers for the "SSD STA Kentish Ragstone Supply" contract, which falls under the category of goods in the construction industry. This procurement, initiated as a single tender action, involves providing natural stone aggregate for embankment repairs along the tidal River Ouse in East Sussex. The tender was awarded on 21 May 2020, with a contract period running from 25 May 2020 to 24 May 2021. The total contract value is £45,000. Interested businesses should note that the location for delivery is in the South East region of the United Kingdom.

This tender presents a significant opportunity for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) operating in the aggregate supply and construction sectors. Companies that specialise in natural stone, gravel, or other aggregates may find suitable opportunities to compete for ongoing supply requirements, as approximately 1,200 tonnes of aggregate are needed annually, potentially varying based on project conditions and budgets. With a commitment to a long-term maintenance programme on embankment repairs, successful bidders could establish ongoing business relationships with the Environment Agency and contribute to sustainable infrastructure projects.

Notice Title

SSD STA Kentish Ragstone Supply

Notice Description

The Environment Agency requires natural stone aggregate for embankment repairs to the tidal River Ouse embankments in East Sussex between Newhaven and the A27 (near Lewes). The banks of the tidal River Ouse were raised in the fifties and the exposed face was protected from scour at high tide by a revetment know as pole wharfing. The revetment consists of chestnut stakes and woven chestnut poles retaining limestone cobbles. A 10 year maintenance programme of embankment repairs began in 2014 and involves replacing damaged or missing polewharfing. Where significant erosion has occurred gabion baskets or clay blisters will be used. Approximately 1,000 - 2,000 tonnes of aggregate each year (from 2015 to 2024) are expected to be used for polewharfing and as gabion fill material. The average annual quantity of aggregate is likely to be around 1,200 tonnes however this figure could vary from year to year as the work is dependent on the condition of the embankments, suitable ground conditions and financial budget. Work is typically restricted to between April and September to coincide with the favourable ground conditions (although emergency repairs may be required outside of this period).
