Summary of the contracting process

The National Physical Laboratory (NPL) is engaged in the procurement of a data acquisition (DAQ) system for its novel bench-top coordinate metrology system (CMS) through a competitive quotation process. The tender, titled "RFQ - DAQ system for FSI", falls under the goods category, specifically laboratory, optical, and precision equipment. The procurement stage has progressed to the award phase, having completed the tender period which ended on 28 January 2020. The contract is set to commence on 3 February 2020 and run until 1 February 2021, with the award value amounting to £67,967. The project location is in Teddington, London, United Kingdom.

This tender presents significant opportunities for businesses, particularly suppliers of laboratory and precision equipment, to engage with the NPL. Companies that excel in providing advanced technological solutions, especially those capable of integrating high-speed DAQ cards, would be well-suited to compete. Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) may find this an advantageous project, as the procurement method favours competitive quotations, allowing them to showcase their innovative capabilities. Engaging with NPL could also facilitate further collaborations in the field of metrology and data processing.

Notice Title

RFQ - DAQ system for FSI

Notice Description

The requirements set by NPL is for improving the data acquisition speed in a novel bench-top coordinate metrology system (CMS), which emulates GPS in operation. Currently the system relies on using a 10 MS/s 14-bit data acquisition (DAQ) system with serial connection to a PC. This setup is not adequate for the new implementation of the instrument, for which we need to acquire signals at a sampling rate up to ~160 MS/s, as well as transfer the acquired data to a PC/GPU device for data processing. We here enquire for a set of DAQ cards that can be integrated in our CMS. The set-up of the CMS consists of a central hub and 5 sensor heads distributed over a volume of 20 m x 20 m x 10 m. The central hub needs to acquire 4 signals, whereas the sensor heads need to acquire 2 signals each. A common clock and trigger signal are used to control the data acquisition on the central hub and sensor heads.
