Notice Title

PURCON698 Buoyancy-driven profiling autonomous underwater vehicles

Notice Description

Buoyancy-driven profiling autonomous underwater vehicles The project requires gliders to be deployed in a variety of locations worldwide but will focus particularly on deployments in the Southern Ocean, on the Antarctic continental shelf and slope, in polynyas and in the vicinity of ice shelves. We will assess hydrography and tracers in the water masses on the continental shelf, and in the dense waters spilling off the shelf into the abyss as part of the global overturning circulation. Of particular interest are mixing processes and turbulence, for example caused by internal wave breaking or by air-sea interaction. We will use the glider-measured temperature and salinity fields together with the glider-derived dive-average-current to assess the current velocity field.
