Summary of the contracting process

The procurement process initiated by Leicestershire County Council involves the installation of trench sheeting at Ashby Canal in Snarestone for badger mitigation works. This project, which falls under the construction work for water projects category, has reached the award stage. The total value of the contract is £120,000, and it will run from 23rd September 2024 to 22nd September 2025. The awarded supplier for this direct procurement method is A and R Rothen Limited. This critical project addresses the structural integrity of the canal while considering ecological constraints, with the aim of preventing breaches caused by a badger sett situated near Snarestone Wharf in England.

This tender presents significant opportunities for businesses involved in environmental construction and wildlife mitigation. Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) may find this particularly advantageous as the contract is designed with their suitability in mind. Businesses experienced in tasks such as dam removal, sheet piling, and the installation of gabion baskets and tow paths are well-suited to compete in similar future projects. Additionally, the focus on expedited work within ecological and structural parameters highlights the council's commitment to preserving both infrastructure and local wildlife, creating a collaborative environment for enterprising companies.

Notice Title

Ashby Canal Trench Sheeting Installation at Snarestone (Badger Mitigation Works)

Notice Description

A section of Ashby canal, close to Snarestone Wharf, has been encroached upon by a large family badger sett, this presents a serious possibility of a breach to the canal. Various options were considered in order to mitigate the risk of a breach caused by the badgers burrowing up to the bank of the Ashby canal. As Badgers are a protected species, there are specific challenges and timescale constraints which mean that the work that is needed to give the canal structural integrity must be expedited. An ecologist was contracted to assess the possible mitigation solutions and assess any effect on the badgers or their sett. The Council have appointed a contractor to undertake the following; * Remove the existing temporary dam to allow commencement of the works. * Install sheet piles to create a new bank. * Install gabion baskets between the piles and existing bank. * Install a new tow path along the edge of the newly created bank.
