Notice Title

For the provision of Restoration Works to Failsworth War Memorial

Notice Description

The Failsworth War Memorial is a slender stone shaft located within a memorial garden. The monument was originally erected in 1923 with the stone shaft carved from a single piece of stone which is decorated with inset glazed tiles and topped with a gilded victory figure. The stonework of the shaft has deteriorated with considerable loss of detailing and was damaged during regular maintenance in the 1970's when the shaft fell and was broken into 3 separate elements. The monument is a significant heritage structure and is grade II listed with Historic England. The stone shaft has great heritage significance as it was carved from a single block of stone to represent a maypole. The top of the stone is adorned with a number of glazed tiles that represented the ribbons of the pole. Both the stone and the glazed tiles are in a poor condition and should conservation repairs not be possible then these elements are to be replaced with a replica stone shaft and new bespoke glazed tile details. Oldham Metropolitan Borough Council is seeking an experienced heritage contractor who can undertake the conservation works to ensure that the works are completed to the required programme and to high conservation standards.
