Summary of the contracting process

The Leicestershire County Council is inviting tenders for the "Whole School Food & Nutrition Programme," aimed at transforming school meals and food education across the East Midlands, particularly focusing on primary and Special Educational Needs (SEN) schools. This programme seeks partners to enhance the food culture within schools, providing families with the skills and knowledge to prepare affordable, nutritious meals. The procurement is currently in the tender stage, with bids due by 20 January 2017. The contract is expected to commence on 1 April 2017 and may extend for up to 24 months. The total budget for this initiative is £540,000, and it is classified under education and training services.

This tender presents a significant opportunity for businesses involved in health, nutrition, and educational services to expand their reach within the Leicestershire area. Suitable competitors may include small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and voluntary community and social enterprises (VCSEs) that can demonstrate experience in food education and community engagement initiatives. By participating in this programme, businesses can contribute to enhancing the educational landscape while also establishing themselves as key players in improving the health and wellbeing of local communities.

Notice Title

Whole School Food & Nutrition Programme

Notice Description

We are seeking to commission a sustainable health and education programme which helps transform school meals and food education in schools and their communities. The aim is to give school pupils and their families the confidence, skills and knowledge they need to cook, grow and enjoy good quality, affordable food, as well as increasing their understanding of where their food comes from. The programme should use food as a way to engage the community and improve the whole school experience, making lunchtimes a positive feature of the day and enriching classroom learning with farm visits and practical cooking and growing. Ultimately the aim of the programme is to give schools the tools they need to make long term changes to their food culture and their curriculum to support healthy behaviours. The programme will be available to every school in Leicestershire, but with the main focus on primary and Special (SEN) schools. The Programme will work in partnership with the County Council and Public Health team to deliver this programme as part of the Leicestershire Healthy Schools Programme. The contract is being offered for an initial period of 12 months, with the option to extend for up to a further 24 months.
