Summary of the contracting process

Cambridgeshire County Council is organising a trial aimed at evaluating the viability of electric vehicle (EV) cable channels as a charging solution for residents without off-street parking. This public procurement process, titled "Cambridgeshire County Council EV Cable Channel Trial Open Supplier List," is currently in the planning stage and is set to commence in early Spring 2026. The trial will be conducted in the East of England, with a supplier-led approach on an approved supplier basis. The trial comprises two phases, allowing up to 250 cable installations across several districts. Suppliers are invited to engage in this opportunity, with the engagement period ending on 28th January 2026. The industry category falls under chargers (31158000) and electric vehicles (34144900).

This tender provides substantial opportunities for businesses involved in EV infrastructure and related technologies to engage in innovative public projects. The trial's phased approach presents a chance for suppliers to demonstrate their capabilities and establish themselves as key players in the growing EV market. Businesses well-suited to compete include those specialising in EV technology, particularly SMEs (small and medium-sized enterprises) and voluntary, community, and social enterprises (VCSEs). By participating, suppliers can foster relationships with local authorities and residents, potentially leading to future collaborations and expanded market presence.

Notice Description

Cambridgeshire County Council are developing a trial to test whether electric vehicle (EV) cable channels are an appropriate charging solution in Cambridgeshire, to enable residents with no off-street parking to charge their EV using a domestic energy tariff by placing the cable in a cross-pavement channel. The Council has approval to trial up to 250 cable channels across two phases. The trial is expected to commence in early Spring 2026. It has agreed to take a supplier led approach, on an approved supplier basis. The trial will follow a phased approach, with a light-touch evaluation of phase 1 with the expectation of a smooth transition to phase 2, dependent on whether any unresolvable issues arise. The number of channels permitted across the two phases are as follows: Phase 1: Up to 50 channel installations; 10 per district. Phase 2: Up to 200 channel installations; 40 per district.
