Summary of the contracting process

The National Physical Laboratory (NPL) is planning a tender for the procurement of a Mass Spectrometer. This high-precision equipment will expand NPL's capabilities in stable and radioactive isotope ratio measurements, enabling collaborations with academia, government, and industry both in the UK and internationally. The estimated contract value is £1,000,000, with a contract period starting on February 26, 2024, and ending on February 25, 2025. The deadline for future notices is January 22, 2024.

This tender by NPL presents an opportunity for businesses involved in laboratory, optical, and precision equipment to compete for supplying a multi-collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer. Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) would find this tender particularly suitable. Businesses interested in geological dating, paleoclimate measurements, and isotopic analysis should consider participating in this procurement process to foster collaborations and expand their market presence.

Notice Title

NPL - Mass Spectrometer

Notice Description

Requirement for a multi-collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (MC-ICP-MS). A MC-ICP-MS can measure the concentration of elements in a sample, using multiple detectors to achieve state-of-the art levels of precisions. MC-ICP-MS will be a new and unique facility utilising expertise in stable and radioactive isotope ratio measurements in a joint laboratory shared across Groups at the UKs National Measurement Institute. This would lead to a significant expansion to NPLs ICP-MS capabilities compared to current capabilities, building on close collaborations established with academics, radioanalytical laboratories, Government and industrial end users in the UK, as well as international research programmes and International Standards committees. This new capability would also develop new collaborations such as for geological dating and paleoclimate measurements. Note: This notice aims at reducing the time limits for receipt of tenders. (subject to funding availability)
