Summary of the contracting process

The National Physical Laboratory (NPL) has awarded a contract titled "RFQ Award - Instantaneous Wide Bandwidth Real-time Software-defined-radio systems 5G" for goods in the industry category of laboratory, optical, and precision equipment. This procurement, initiated via a limited method involving a competitive quotation below the threshold, was completed on 9 October 2020. The contract spans from 19 October 2020 to 19 October 2021, with delivery located in Teddington, London. The tender was officially closed on 21 August 2020, coinciding with the end of the tender period.

This opportunity is ideal for businesses specialising in the production of advanced radio frequency (RF) equipment, particularly those offering software-defined radio (SDR) solutions. Companies that can provide high-speed digital interfaces for real-time signal processing and flexible architectural systems will be well-suited to compete. Engaging in this kind of procurement can significantly enhance business growth, particularly for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) involved in innovative wireless communications technologies.

Notice Title

RFQ Award - Instantaneous Wide Bandwidth Real-time Software-defined-radio systems 5G

Notice Description

The NPL requirement is to have a wideband multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) radio frequency (RF) vector-based testbed system that is capable of enabling real-time software-defined-radio (SDR) operation. The purpose is to establish a MIMO over-the-air (OTA) measurement testbed system with user-programmable, reconfigurable and real-time signal processing field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs)-based SDR capability. The system should have flexible software-designed architecture for real-time signal processing and control that can adapts new radio (NR) standards and emerging protocols so to enable the traceable measurement metrology development for current and future wireless communications to address measurement challenges on NR RF signal design and communication algorithm. The asset must consist of at least a 2 x 2 MIMO system with high-speed digital interfaces that could handle instantaneous wide bandwidth data.
