Summary of the contracting process

The University of Sunderland is seeking a competent contractor for its catering services following an award announcement made on 1st February 2018. The organisation aims to enhance the student experience across its two campuses located in Sunderland, which cater to approximately 11,000 students and 1,300 staff members. The contract period is set to begin on 1st August 2018 and will last for ten years, concluding on 31st July 2028. This contracting process followed a selective procurement method under the competitive dialogue approach, with a tender period that concluded on 5th June 2017. The industry category is primarily focused on hotel, restaurant, and retail trade services, with various catering outlets and vending services included in the scope of the contract.

This tender presents significant opportunities for businesses specialising in catering and food services, particularly those with innovative service delivery and branding approaches. Companies that can provide high-quality, value-for-money solutions will be well-positioned to compete, as the University is looking for imaginative and dynamic food service offerings to energise campus life. The potential for substantial turnover, estimated at around £2.3 million annually, makes this contract particularly attractive for both small and medium enterprises (SMEs) able to deliver on the diverse needs of students, staff, and visitors within the University environment.

There are potentially 11 catering outlets and 38 vending machines across the two sites providing an annual turnover of circa 2.3 million.* The customer base is varied, in addition to catering for a diverse range of students and staff, one of the potential outlets is within a public visitor attraction operating on a daily basis throughout the year and another new outlet is located within a new building, Hope Street Xchange, a business centre on the University Campus. It is expected that the successful company will support the University by providing an imaginative and dynamic food service in an environment that encourages and stimulates vibrancy on campus. Given this will require significant investment, the University is offering up to a ten year contract. *Note that not all outlets are part of existing outsourced catering service
