Summary of the contracting process

The University of Manchester is seeking to award a contract for a Confocal (Spinning Disk) Microscope with an isolation table and environmental chamber, aimed to support essential cancer research activities at the Manchester Cancer Research Centre. This procurement falls under the goods category, specifically focusing on microscopes, with the tender being classified as a limited procedure without prior publication. The award of the contract has been denoted as active, with a total value of £240,000 and a standstill period of 10 calendar days following the award. Essential research is set to commence by the end of March, necessitating the delivery of the system to the university’s location in Manchester (postal code M139PL).

This tender represents an excellent opportunity for businesses specialising in high-precision scientific equipment, particularly those involved in developing advanced microscopy systems. Companies that can offer superior optical quality equipment, which diminishes visible light exposure to enhance cell viability, would be particularly well-suited to compete. The successful acquisition of this contract could not only expand a supplier’s presence in the academic and research sectors but also contribute significantly to advancements in cancer research methodologies.

Notice Description

This is a Voluntary Ex Ante Transparency (VEAT) notice to alert the market of the University of Manchester intention to award a contract for the provision of a Confocal (Spinning Disk) Microscope system with isolation table and environmental chamber intended for the Manchester Cancer Research Centre.

Lot Information

Lot 1

Our research groups at The University of Manchester Cancer Research Centre require a high specification Confocal (Spinning Disk) Microscope system with isolation table and environmental chamber to support essential Cancer research activities due to begin end of March. The Funding has been awarded for the Manchester Cancer Research Centre based in the OCRB (Oglesby Cancer Research Building).

Procurement Information

This is a Voluntary Ex Ante Transparency (VEAT) notice to alert the market of the University of Manchester intention to award a contract. Please note: an award has not been made for this requirement. The University of Manchester will incorporate a standstill period of 10 calendar days. The essential components of confocal microscopy in viable cells is optical quality which impacts resolution and sensitivity. As the majority of our cells do not experience visible light the act of imaging using high intensity lasers is an artificial environment and detrimental to cell health (heating effects, DNA damage etc.). The feature of this system revolves around the increased resolution and sensitivity offered by the new line of Olympus objective lenses. As a consequence, laser power for illumination is reduced, light based biological damage reduced thus extending the timeframe for the research question. As much of this work will be detection of low light signals in live cell samples this is essential. The specialist range of objective lens that are suitable for both single cell and thicker tissues e.g. organoid and spheroids. These are the critical aspects of the Olympus system that will make the intended research possible. To improve detection the system will be enclosed in an opaque environmental chamber so that the light from accompanying electronics with LEDs will be nullified.
