Summary of the contracting process

The Medicines Discovery Catapult (MDC), based in Cheshire, UK, has completed a procurement process titled "The Supply, Delivery, Installation and Maintenance of Laboratory Equipment". This procurement, categorised under laboratory, optical, and precision equipment, was initiated as a limited tender with a focus on providing essential equipment for COVID-PCR testing. The award for this tender was signed on 23rd July 2021, following a decision related to maintaining ISO 15189 accreditation. The process involved a single supplier, Life Technologies Limited, which successfully fulfilled the contract valued at £500,000.

This tender presents significant opportunities for businesses specialising in laboratory equipment and services, particularly those capable of providing specific items required by ISO-accredited facilities. Suppliers who focus on precision laboratory instruments and maintain accreditation relevant to the healthcare sector, especially those involved in diagnostics and medical research, would be particularly well-suited to compete in similar future tenders. The stringent requirements and awarded contract reflect a stable demand for high-quality, compliant products and services within the medical research industry.

Lot Information

Lot 1

MDC are expanding their PCR capability and thus require the supply and installation of the below equipment for COVID-PCR testing via the Accredited assay: 5 x Thermo Kingfisher flex 3 x Quant Studio 7's MDC Ltd is a ISO accreditation laboratory within the terms of the ISO 15189 Accreditation we must use the above equipment.

Procurement Information

MDC is an ISO 15189 Accreditation Laboratory and our commercial contracts dictate that we must hold / retain this status. The ISO 15189 Accreditation has been reviewed / awarded on the current equipment within the MDC Laboratory including the Thermo Fisher Kingfishers, as such we are unable to install 'other' equipment into the laboratory without this affecting the ISO 15189 Accreditation. The installation of 'other' equipment would invalidate the ISO 15189 Accreditation and the MDC would be have to be reassessed for the ISO 15189 Accreditation and the introduction of 'other' equipment. The need to stay with the current equipment supplier is founded on the use of a single assay and protocol under our UKAS accreditation; this ensures that 1) Workflow is consistent to one method 2) Mistakes cannot occur due to confusion of different methods, training a workforce of more than 700FTE on new systems, sops and complex workflows runs risks that errors will be introduced 3) That the quality standards required by UKAS are continued to be met 4) We maintain consistency with reagent provider CE-certification on this equipment
