Summary of the contracting process

The United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) is conducting a procurement process for the supply of "In-Vessel Mirrors for the MAST-U EBW System," which falls under the category of goods and specifically relates to mirrors (CPV code: 38622000). This procurement is currently in the planning stage, with the last update dated 2nd February 2022. Interested parties should take note of the delivery location at Culham Science Centre, Abingdon, UK. This tender is governed by the legal framework specified in CELEX 32014L0024.

This tender presents significant growth opportunities for companies that specialise in advanced materials, particularly those with expertise in copper-coated graphite or mechanical engineering services. Businesses that can innovate or provide high-quality precision products for technical applications in fusion research would be particularly well-positioned to compete. The expected innovative nature of the in-vessel mirrors calls for strong capabilities in both engineering and manufacturing processes, creating a niche for specialised suppliers in this procurement process.

Notice Title

In-Vessel Mirrors for the MAST-U EBW System

Notice Description

UKAEA is installing an Electron Bernstein Wave (EBW) system on MAST-U, which aims at injecting two dual-frequency (28GHz and 34.8GHz) microwave beams each of up to 900kW and pulse duration of 4.5s. There are eight 1 OFF in-vessel copper-coated graphite mirrors. The primary function of the in-vessel mirrors is to redirect the microwaves, produced by the gyrotron, and direct these into the plasma. The main microwave mirror face has a curved profile, providing focusing of the beam. The curved profile is defined using an ellipsoid shape. These mirror faces absorb a small percentage of the microwaves. These absorbed microwaves act as a heat flux on the mirror face in a gaussian distribution, peaking at 750kW/m2. A uniform radiative plasma load of 210kW/m2 also acts on all faces excluding the mirror face.
