Summary of the contracting process

The NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) is planning a tender for the procurement of organ transport boxes, valued at £150,000. The primary industry category for this procurement is goods, specifically focusing on storage containers, as classified under CPV code 44613400. This procurement process is currently in the planning stage, with a future notice date set for 1 June 2022. The delivery addresses for the intended supplies will be located in the UK, and the procurement will adhere to the legal standards set out by the appropriate governing entities.

This opportunity presents a significant avenue for growth for businesses that manufacture or supply medical containers or related packaging solutions. Companies with experience in producing sanitary storage options, particularly those able to meet the regulatory requirements for medical devices, will be well-suited to compete for this contract. As NHSBT is particularly interested in engaging with potential suppliers before the formal process begins, this is an excellent chance for businesses to establish connections and possibly validate their products ahead of the tender issuance.

Notice Description

Thermal boxes for the transportation of organs.

Lot Information

Lot 1

NHSBT holds contracts for provision of consumables used in the retrieval of human organs for transplantation. We are seeking interest from potential suppliers of organ transport boxes, with a view to commencing a formal procurement process.

These boxes are used with wet ice to cool and maintain the temperature of the organ, and to protect the organ in transit. The organ is packaged in fluid and triple-bagged before being surrounded by the ice in the box. The boxes are then used to safely transport the organ from the donor hospital to the transplant centre.

Prior to commencing a formal procurement process, NHSBT wishes to engage with suppliers who are experienced in manufacturing/supplying containers, although a history of providing containers for medical use is not essential.

Should any containers meet the core requirements of the specification as described below, specialist validation will be undertaken by NHSBT to ensure the containers are safe to use.

Small Container:
* UKCA Mark for Medical Devices (formerly CE Mark Class IIa)
* Internal capacity 12-18 litres
* Weight when packed with ice <12 kg
* Single entry point via the lid (ideally no bung, hatch or outpipe)
* Maintain internal temperature of 0-4degc for up to 48 hours
* Reusable so as to minimize waste
