Summary of the contracting process

The procurement process for the GIS Programme - Regional Supplier Contract - South Wiltshire is managed by the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology, focusing on the telecommunications services industry. The contract targets the South Wiltshire area aiming to build gigabit-capable broadband infrastructure, specifically through the Gigabit Infrastructure Subsidy programme. This procurement is in the contract award stage, with Wessex Internet Limited being an active supplier. The project commenced on 4th March 2024 and is due to last until 29th February 2036. Contracts have been structured in stages covering design, build, and monitoring over nine years, facilitating the long-term provision of broadband services in hard-to-reach areas. The procurement follows the Public Contracts Regulations 2015 under a restricted procedure, emphasising the importance of bringing connectivity to the final 20% of areas unlikely to receive commercial investment.

This tender offers significant opportunities for large telecommunications businesses, particularly those with expertise in gigabit-capable network construction and maintenance. The programme’s scale and duration suggest steady demand for suppliers specializing in telecommunications infrastructure and related services, as the UK government is focused on intervening in areas, which include South Wiltshire, that are not commercially viable for private companies. Participating in such government-backed schemes could substantially increase business exposure and credibility within public sector markets, positioning businesses well for future contracts relating to communications infrastructure in the UK. The project's substantial allocation, such as the contract value at over £23 million, underscores its potential to foster business growth and collaboration with public agencies.
