Summary of the contracting process

The NHS Supply Chain has initiated a procurement process titled "School Fruit and Vegetable Scheme Supply" under the category of "Food, Beverages, Tobacco, and Related Products." The scheme aims to supply fruit and vegetable products to nominated distribution hubs across England as part of a government-funded initiative to provide daily produce to all key stage 1 children (ages 4-7) in over 16,520 primary schools. The procurement method is an open procedure, and the most recent tender update was on 17 October 2024. The value of the framework agreement is estimated to be £62,700,000 for the first 24 months, with a potential extension totalling an estimated £125,400,000 over 48 months if extended. The procurement is at the tender stage, with submissions for various lots including Apples, Pears, Easy Peel Citrus, Bananas, Carrots, Sugar Snap Peas, Speciality Tomatoes, Dried Grapes, Baby Cucumbers, and Mini Sweet Pepper Bites.

This tender represents a significant opportunity for businesses involved in the production and distribution of fruits and vegetables. Companies with experience in handling large-scale supply chains and a commitment to quality and collaboration will find this a lucrative contract, able to engage with NHS Supply Chain and schools directly. The procurement is open to numerous lots, allowing both SMEs and larger enterprises to participate and potentially secure contracts that will enable business growth, market presence, and long-term engagement in the public sector education and health supply chain market.
