We are undertaking market exploration to inform our long term thinking in relation to the Home to School transportation service in Southwark. The Council provides travel assistance to and from schools and colleges for eligible children and young people with special educational needs and other vulnerabilities. The support is via four main mechanisms: - Bus transport - Taxi transport - Direct payments, with funds delegated to parents to arrange transport. - Travelcards, where young people can travel on public transport. The Council provides travel assistance to in the region of 737 children and young people, of whom vehicle transport (bus or taxi) is provided for approximately 75% The needs of the children and young people may include:- * Physical disabilities including wheelchair access * Additional learning needs * Autism * A range of communication, emotional, behavioural support needs. * Visual and/or hearing impairments. Most journeys require one or more passenger assistants to support children or young people due to their additional needs. Routes go to schools and colleges in and out of the borough. There are usually in the region of 60-70 routes in place.
