Summary of the contracting process

The United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) is planning to procure engineering-design services for industrial processes and production under the tender titled "THALIA Gloveboxes." This procurement involves the complete design, analysis, manufacture, assembly, Factory Acceptance Testing, delivery, Site Acceptance Testing, and support during installation and commissioning of a glovebox experiment intended for tritium analytics in breeder materials. The procurement will take place at the Culham Campus in Abingdon. The procurement stage is currently in planning, with the future notice date set for 18th November 2024. The procurement falls under the services category and is associated with several CPV classifications including radioactive materials, radio-isotopes, and laboratory services, among others.

This tender provides significant opportunities for businesses in sectors such as engineering design, construction, and laboratory equipment manufacturing to expand their services and capabilities. Companies with expertise in designing and building complex engineering systems, particularly those involving safety compliance with tritium safety processes, will find this project particularly suited to their skills. The scope includes designing and constructing a specialised glovebox and transporting it to the UK's Culham Campus, thus presenting opportunities for firms specialising in manufacturing, welding, metalworking, and various installation services. Additionally, the requirement for proving conformity and maintenance documentation may benefit businesses with experience in regulatory compliance and technical documentation.

Notice Title

THAILA GLOVEBOXES

Notice Description

UKAEA would like to procure the design, analysis, manufacture, assembly, Factory Acceptance Testing, delivery, Site Acceptance Testing plus support during installation and commissioning of a glovebox experiment designed to prove out tritium analytics in breeder materials. The glovebox will be installed at the Culham Campus. The experiment will need to accurately meter a tritium gas stream, to understand the retained tritium in the breeder. The experiment will also need to design a sampling system to allow the breeder materials to be tested in off-line techniques, such as Liquid Scintillation Counters.

Lot Information

Lot 1

The scope of work for the THALIA Design &Build contract will include: Complete design of the THALIA Glovebox experiments, including reviews with UKAEA Engineering team to ensure compliance with the tritium safety processes Procurement of all the equipment required for THALIA Construction of the completed Glovebox This could be onsite at Culham if there are concerns over transporting the Glovebox in its completed state. Transportation of the Glovebox to Culham Campus It is expected that the supplier provides design documentation, maintenance schedules and conformity certificates with all equipment. Where applicable it is expected that equipment supplied to UKAEA is conformity assessed against all relevant legislative requirements and marked accordingly (UKCA marked). Any relevant analysis work under-taken to prove the conformity of the design will be shared with UKAEA. A Factory Acceptance Test will be witnessed by UKAEA staff prior to acceptance of the completed Glovebox experiment.
