Summary of the contracting process

The Met Office is planning a procurement process for the supply of temperature sensors to support its network of approximately 140 voluntary climate stations across the UK. The procurement is currently at the planning stage, with industry engagement activities scheduled to commence soon. As part of this process, the Met Office plans to publish a Request for Information (RFI) by June 2025 to identify potential suppliers who can meet their specific requirements. Businesses are invited to express their interest by contacting Ms Lisa Marvin at the Met Office. The procurement falls under the "Laboratory, optical and precision equipment" category and is essential for maintaining the accuracy of daily climatological readings.

This tender presents a significant business growth opportunity for companies manufacturing or supplying laboratory and precision equipment, particularly temperature sensors. Firms specialising in high-precision instrumentation, calibration services, and environmental monitoring equipment would be well-suited to compete for this contract. By participating in this early market engagement, businesses can showcase their products' compatibility with the Met Office's needs and gain a foothold in a valuable supply chain for a prominent public sector body. The Met Office's procurement aims to ensure the continued reliability and precision of its climate data collection, offering a stable and long-term partnership for the successful provider.

Notice Title

Supply of Temperature Sensors

Notice Description

The Met Office operates a network of circa.140 voluntary climate stations located across the UK. The voluntary observers who run these sites on our behalf are provided with instrumentation, including temperature sensors, all of which are regularly calibrated to national standards to contribute daily climatological readings. Readings are taken manually once a day from the sensor / thermometer housed within a Stevenson Screen. Quality controlled readings are then entered into the climate data record. Our current network of temperature sensors are nearing end of life and we now need to source a replacement. Met Office therefore intends to conduct some early market engagement to determine what is currently available on/in the market to meet our requirements and will shortly publish a request for information (RFI) to aid us in this regard. If you would like to participate, please email lisa.marvin@metoffice.gov.uk and the RFI will be shared with you.
