Summary of the contracting process

NHS England procured pharmaceutical products through the NHS Branded Medicines Tranche A framework. The scope covers eight therapeutic areas: erythropoiesis-stimulating agents, granulocyte-colony stimulating factor, insulin analogues, multiple sclerosis medicines, parenteral iron, severe asthma medicines, severe asthma interleukin inhibitors and teriparatide. Lot 1 covers branded medicines for the North of England and the Midlands and East, while Lot 2 covers natalizumab for London and the South of England. The framework serves NHS participating authorities and pharmacy purchasing points, with delivery across England. It is a goods procurement for pharmaceutical products, suitable for SMEs. NHS England is the buying organisation and framework users may include authorities and pharmacy purchasing points identified in the procurement documents.

The procurement was awarded through an open procedure and is now contractually active. It uses an open framework with reopening of competition. Lot 1 was awarded on 15 June 2026 to 25 pharmaceutical suppliers, including Sanofi, Accord-UK, Amgen, Bayer, Biogen, Chugai, Cipla, Eli Lilly, GSK, Merck, Novo Nordisk, Pfizer, Roche, Sandoz, Teva, Viatris and Vifor Pharma; its contract was signed on 6 July 2026. The Lot 1 contract is worth £665,389,588 excluding VAT and runs from 1 September 2026 to 31 August 2028, with extensions up to 31 August 2030. Lot 2 was awarded on 15 June 2026 to Biogen Idec and Sandoz, signed on 6 July 2026, and is worth £35,312,548 excluding VAT. It runs to 31 August 2027, with extensions up to 31 August 2028. Price was not the only award criterion; all criteria were in the procurement documents.

This award demonstrates sustained NHS demand for branded medicines across multiple specialist therapeutic categories and at substantial framework scale. It shows that the relevant supplier market includes both large pharmaceutical companies and smaller specialist businesses: six SMEs submitted final bids for Lot 1, and the lots were marked as suitable for SMEs. A credible future competitor would need a branded-medicines portfolio aligned to one or more of the eight categories, reliable supply capability across the relevant NHS regions, and the commercial capacity to operate within a multi-supplier framework. Suppliers should also be prepared for competition to reopen under the framework, since the arrangements use reopening of competition. Lot 2 indicates particular demand for natalizumab in London and the South of England, with Biogen Idec and Sandoz selected for that requirement.
