Summary of the contracting process

ScotRail Trains Limited, located in Glasgow, United Kingdom, has completed the procurement process for the "Class 156 Life Extension – Amplifier upgrades" project. This project falls under the industry category of Amplifiers, classified with the CPV code 32343000. The procurement involved the supply, design, and support of automatic amplifiers for its Class 156 fleet of Diesel Multiple Units, aimed at improving the public address system. The tender stage reached completion as of 15th October 2025, with the contract having been signed on 6th October 2025. The procurement was conducted through a limited method, specifically an award procedure without prior publication, due to the integration needs and intellectual property rights held by the existing equipment manufacturer.

This tender represents a significant opportunity for businesses involved in railway technology and communications equipment, particularly those specialising in integration with existing systems. While the procurement method designates a single-source procedure, it underscores the importance of establishing and maintaining strategic partnerships with major transport operators like ScotRail. Companies that are original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) or those holding specialised intellectual property rights in railway systems stand to benefit greatly from such targeted opportunities. Despite the specific nature of this tender, it highlights avenues for businesses to focus on niche markets where they hold exclusive capabilities, thus fostering growth through specialised, high-value contracts in the railway services sector.
